The St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri is the Home Rink of the SPFSA. The SPFSA is proud to support all of its members, who are both USFS and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) skaters.

Melissa Felps Awarded ISI Scholarship
2011 Scholarship Recipients Melissa Felps and Melanie McDonough with ISIA Education Foundation Trustee Larry Fies
SPFSA Member Melissa Felps has been awarded the 2011 Ice Skating Institute of America Education Foundation Scholarship!
The Foundation helps to enhance the educational opportunities of ISI members by encouraging skaters to make athletic as well as educational achievements, while giving back to their sport. To be eligible for this award, Melissa dedicated herself to her skating, her education, and her rink, club, and community through volunteering. She is among an elite few who have been awarded this scholarship.
Melissa, who is one of only two skaters who were awarded the 2011 scholarship, has passed the ISI Open Gold Freestyle, Pairs 4, Couples 4, and Dance 5, as well as USFS Junior Moves in the Field, Pre-Silver Dance, and Pre-Juvenile Free Skate. Melissa was a member of Synchro St. Louis teams for ten years, and as a member of the Diamond Edges, she is a two-time USFS Sectional Champion, a USFS National Competitor, and most recently, an ISI National Champion. She was also recognized at the Platinum level in the US Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Recognition Program. Throughout her skating career, Melissa has competed in numerous ISI National Events and has volunteered countless hours at the Rec-Plex local and national events.
Melissa is a Francis Howell Central High School graduate, where she has been a member of Student Council, the National Honor Society, and the Varsity Girls Golf Team. She has been recognized through Arete, and was honored by the Francis Howell School Board for having a GPA of 4.0 or higher all four years of high school. St. Louis University has awarded Melissa the Dean’s Scholarship for Academics. She will begin there in the Fall with a major in Nuclear Medical Technology and a minor in Spanish.
We are very fortunate to have Melissa as part of our club and we are very proud of her. Congratulations Melissa!
Synchro St. Louis Teams Excel at Synchro Champs, Diamond Edges Win ISI National Title
All six Synchro St. Louis teams traveled to the ISI Synchronized Championships in Chicago last weekend with every team placing in the top three, including the Diamond Edges winning the Teen Premier Round and becoming ISI National Champions.
Saturday morning started with two clean, energetic performances by the Ice Gems and the Diamond Edges, who each won the Senior Youth and Teen Skating Compulsories events. This was followed by a strong performance by Onyx Ice which earned them the silver medal in the Youth Skating Compulsory event. Also winning the silver medal, the Ruby Edges finished out the morning with another clean peformance in the Youth Formation event.
The afternoon brought the Initial Rounds for the skating teams. The Jade Blades and Ice Gems each placed first, and the Diamond Edges placed second, thus earning all skating teams a place in the Premier Rounds on Sunday!
Later that evening, the Emerald Blades took to the ice in the highly competitive Junior Youth Formation event. After all of the cheers from their teammates and families, their music began. Just 30 seconds in, their music cut out, and like true champions, the girls did not even flinch, and just kept on skating and kept on smiling all the way through the rest of their three and a half minute program. The cheers only got louder and there wasn't a dry eye as the team ended an amazing performance and they skated off the ice into the arms of their teammates who were all so very proud of them. Their performance earned them the silver medal.
Saturday ended with the Synchro Showcase where the Diamond Edges and the Love Bugs Team Compulsory performed for the crowd of more that 1000.
Sunday morning started with almost back to back performances by the Jade Blades and Ice Gems. The Jade Blades went first and they delivered a clean program which earned the silver medal in the Youth Skating Small Premier Round - the highest Synchro Champs finish ever for the Jade Blades! The Ice Gems skated a very strong program in the highly competitive Senior Youth Premier Round which included teams that had qualified for USFS Nationals. Their performance earned them the bronze medal.
Synchro St. Louis wrapped up the weekend with the Teen Skating Premier Round. The Diamond Edges skated second in this very talented group of the top seven teams that had earned a place in the Premier Round. They skated a strong, fast, and very dramatic program and ended to incredible cheering from their Synchro St. Louis family. The cheers only got louder when the Diamond Edges were announced as the Teen Premier Skating Champions, and winners of the Boyd Wietecter Trophy, the highest accomplishment for a team in ISI. The trophy is a beautiful crystal vase, and it will be on display (after spending a little time with the team) at the Rec-Plex until next year's Synchro Champs.
More stories and photos are to come. The weekend was filled with lots of great skating and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched. It was definitely a great weekend to be from the Rec-Plex and the SPFSA!
Diamond Edges Qualify for Nationals

The St. Peters Figure Skating Association’s Synchro St. Louis Diamond Edges have qualified to compete in the 2011 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. This U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) national event will take place March 2-5 in Ontario, Calif.
The Junior-level Diamond Edges synchronized skating team, which trains at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, earned a trip to the national championship with a Bronze medal performance at the U.S. Figure Skating 2011 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships, Feb. 3-5, in Rochester, Minn. The Junior level consists of skaters ages 12 to 19.
“This is only the second time the St. Peters Figure Skating Association has had a team qualify for the U.S. Championships, and it's the highest-level team to ever qualify from the state of Missouri,” said Diamond Edges coach Heather Hyatt.

Rex-Plex Awarded 2012 ISI Synchronized Skating Championships
The St. Peters Rec-Plex has been awarded the bid to host the 2012 ISI Synchronized Skating Championships!
The competition will be held March 30, 31 and April 1, 2012. The Rec-Plex hosted this event in 2008 and there were 1,106 competitors and 105 synchro teams. This will be the fourth national event that the Rec-Plex has hosted.
Pam Forster Wins ISI District 9 Award
SPFSA and Rec-Plex coach, Pam Forster was presented with the 2010 ISI District 9 Merit Award.
This award is presented to ISI members who have demonstrated excellence in promoting ISI membership, programs and activities at the local level. Pam was presented with the award at the annual District 9 meeting on October 4. Congratulations, Pam!
Heather Hyatt Named 2010 ISI Instructor of the Year
SPFSA is proud to announce that our very own Rec-Plex and SPFSA coach, Heather Hyatt, has been awarded the 2010 Ice Skating Institute's Instructor of the Year!
Heather was presented the award on June 4 at the ISI National Conference in Las Vegas. The ISI Instructor of the Year Award is presented to a current ISI Professional member who is dedicated, inspirational and giving to his or her students. He or she teaches for the love of the sport and encourages people to enjoy the benefits of ice skating through ISI programs and events.
Thank you for your dedication and hard work, Heather.
